The Evolution of Modern Lighting Poles and its Maintenance

Gone are the days for lighting pole maintenance that requires "cherry pickers" or dismantle the whole pole structure to change those faulty/broken lighting fixtures and etc.

At present, owner/plant maintenance manager preferred to have a lighting pole with hinges to lower and raise during periodical maintenance. In USA, the lighting pole maintenance could be done every 4 to 5 years.
For Eaton vendor, there were several inspection schedule to be done on lighting pole which includes one week, one month, one year and yearly after the installation.

Below is one of the procedure on how the modern lighting poles (Abacus' York Hinged Columns) are lowered and raised during periodical maintenance.

As you can see, there will be operating tools needed to complete the work. Those are specially fabricated and supplied by vendors which is/are to be used for all the installed poles.
As per the vendor's information, it would be approximately 8 minutes to complete the procedure of lowering/raising per pole. Comparing it to the traditional fixed type, the whole period can be reduced.

For discussion, I would like to introduce this vendor Abacus and their products to examine what are those benefits and disadvantages of having this modern lighting pole with hinges.

Below is their "York Hinged Columns" which features a hinged located above 1 meter from floor level.

Operating tools is/are required to lower/raised the upper part of the pole. There are two types, one is without pump mechanism and another is with pump to assist heavy load.

These two tools used for heavy type pole
Does not require a separate pump unit, applicable for lighter poles

Another type of lighting pole  by Abacus is the tubular types. Physical characteristics are similar with Lycorpole and Galvapole Lighting Poles.

Please see this photo below.

Hinging is provided on the base portion of the lighting pole.

A counterbalance unit is provided to assist lowering/lifting the pole's upper portion. These the same types as the "York Hinged". There is the spring type and the hydraulic type.

Of course, price for the above would be higher than the traditional type but having this type will save a lot of expenses for maintenance, safety  & health to personnel and increase reliability of lighting system serving its purpose.

Lycorpole, which has a long business with the traditional fixed type poles had adapted already to had mid-hinged design as to comply the client's requirement. But I guess the convenience in maintenance for their current design would be lesser  compared to what the Abacus had to offer as of the moment of writing.

There also advantages of using fixed lighting poles, we could discuss it for some other time.
